Marbella removes over 2.3 million kilos of invasive algae from beaches during Holy Week

The Marbella City Council has removed over 2.3 million kilos of invasive ‘rugulopteryx okamurae’ algae from the beaches during Holy Week. Councilor Diego López emphasized that ‘this figure exceeds the total collected throughout the entire year of 2024, a fact that should raise all alarms,’ and denounced the ‘absolute lack of support from the central government, which has the jurisdiction in this matter, in the face of an environmental emergency that overwhelms municipal resources.’ Lopez stated, ‘What we are experiencing this year is unprecedented,’ pointing out that the City Council ‘cannot tackle a problem of this magnitude alone,’ while lamenting that ‘we still do not receive economic or technical support from any administration.’ ‘This situation affects the entire Andalusian coast and requires a coordinated response,’ he emphasized.
