Mayors Join Forces to Tackle Invasive Algae Infestation in Andalusian Coast

Mayors of coastal towns in the Western Costa del Sol and public officials from the province of Cadiz have come together in Marbella to address the ‘grave problem’ posed by the proliferation of invasive algae along the Andalusian coast. During the meeting, local leaders and representatives of joint organizations highlighted the urgent need for the central government to take action and assume responsibility for the ecological and economic emergency. Marbella’s mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, emphasized that ‘municipalities cannot continue to bear the consequences of this environmental catastrophe alone, which worsens every year and transforms our beaches in a matter of hours.’ She explained that the issue, first detected in Cadiz in 2015, has progressively spread to Malaga, leading to an increase in the tons of algae being removed.
