The City Council has decreed two days of official mourning for the passing of the writer and Nobel Prize in Literature, Mario Vargas Llosa, who held the distinction of being the Adoptive Son of Marbella since 2010. During these two days, flags at all municipal buildings will fly at half-mast as a sign of respect and mourning. The Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, has extended condolences to his family ‘for this irreparable loss’ and has stated that ‘today is a sad day for the city and the world of literature’. The mayor highlighted that ‘among all the places in the world, Vargas Llosa chose us as a place of inspiration and rest and was undoubtedly one of our best ambassadors’, while recalling that the writer ‘established very close ties with our town, actively participating in cultural and social life’. ‘We will always remember him for his humanity and closeness’, affirmed the mayor, emphasizing ‘his vast literary legacy and overflowing talent’.
